In 2006 total turnover reached to 137 billion dollars and in 2010 a growth of 199 billion dollars is expected. Based on these data, we can conclude that the Turkish retail sector is in period of change, that the change from traditional retail to organized retail is speeding up and that the economy has a potential to get affected from this sector. Thus we can easily say that the retail sector is the impetus of transformation of the first quarter of the 20th century.
Sector employs 300.000 people every year. The share of organized retail is 35 % which corresponds to 48 billion dollars. In 2010 this share is expected to increase to 45 % with a 90 billion dollars share. In EU there are 15 hypermarkets per person and 150 supermarkets per person while in Turkey there are 3 hypermarkets per person and 17 supermarkets per person.
The ratio of people who live in the urban is also important. In 2015 it is expected that the people between 15-64 ages will be equal to 68 % of the population which leads us to the conclusion that compared to Europe, we have a rather young population.
