The production of machinery has a significant importance in manufacturing industry. The share of machinery production industry has been increasing in manufacturing industry in development course of the countries.
This structure has also similar character in developed countries besides the sector preserves its labor-intensive character. Excluding very small number of machine types, the mass production techniques are applied in this sector. In recent years, it may be argued that the companies in the sector tend to make machines by complying with customer specific requirements.
These demands requiring extra engineering works lead to the increase of the prices in the Western countries. Whereas in Turkey, comparative inexpensiveness of engineering services, as well as labor force, strengthen the machinery manufacturers by increasing their competitiveness and it is expected that this superiority will be preserved in the near future too. The technological experiences of the Turkish companies in such labor-intensive production sector, as well as low engineering and labor force fees in production according to customer specific requirements compared with machinery manufacturing developed countries, provide for them good opportunity in international competition.
This positive nature increases the chance of the Turkish machinery manufacturer in renewing the facilities or making new investments in third world countries by going into cooperation with companies located in Western countries, when necessary.
The ratio of the machinery manufacturing industry in the manufacturing industry is 4.7 percent. The information which the Association of Machinery Manufacturers (MIB) gathered from 185 member companies shows that the average employment of the companies in this group is 53 persons. In case of generalization of the same value, it is anticipated that 180.000-200.000 persons are employed in companies remaining out of companies making workshop type manufacturing and/or making repair and renewal works and running as subsidiary industry or manufacturing parts and components for reconditioning market.
The total employment is calculated as 500.000 persons when the said small-scale companies are considered too. The employment of the tooling makers and the companies which are making hydro pneumatic and electrical-electronic components for machinery is included.
