Worldwide production of glass sector which formed of sub-groups as sheet glass, treated sheet glass, glass household goods, glass package, glass fiber, insulation fiber and special glasses (flat screen vision glasses) is 120 million tons, and market value is 127 billion $. World demand on glass sector, which gains input to many sectors as end product, intermediate goods and raw material, has grown by 3-4% during the last years.
It is estimated that the world sheet glass demand will reach to 6,1 billion m2 with an increase of 5,3% annually, and world sheet glass production will reach to 56,6 million m2 with an increase of 5,5%. 45-50 million metric tonnes of this production is formed of qualified sheet glass and the remaining part is mostly formed of low qualified sheet glass produced in China and a small ratio in Russia. It is also estimated that treated glass market ratio will reach to 60 billion $ with an increase of 4,8% average in each year until the year 2010.
Together with the intense competition experienced worldwide, reorganization, rationalization and tendency to products which have higher added value increase. Few numbers of international companies which dominate the sub-groups of the sector, increase their investment in developing countries mainly Middle and Eastern Europe, Russia and Far Eastern Countries where rapid growth in line with providing cost advantage and establishing market domination strategies is seen.
Developed countries which lose their competition power as a result of such development have become net glass importers in some sub-product groups.
Export of surplus supply created in countries which have all or a part of cheap energy, fuel and labour advantages, to the world markets both created price pressure and increases unfair competition. This situation causes application of protection measures more frequently, and leads the worldwide prices to decrease. Design, quality, security, safety, distribution network, after-sale customer services and cost decrease have vital importance in the sector today.
Turkish glass industry, which has a strong R&D and trained human resource, aims to reach a more competitive structure and develop its performance more at the same time by making a difference in the market in accelerating production and increasing competition conditions.
